Taiwan Winter Travel Guide (Dec–Feb): Weather & What to Wear

Is winter a good time to visit Taiwan? The short answer

Taiwan's winter (roughly December to February) isn't very cold, but the north and south feel very different. The north sits under the northeast monsoon — often grey, drizzly and damp-cool — while central and southern Taiwan are drier and sunnier with pleasant days. If you dislike heat, winter is a great season for city walks, hot springs and warming food.

Winter is also Taiwan's busiest festival season: Christmas lights, the Taipei 101 New Year's Eve fireworks, Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival come one after another, plus hot springs, strawberries, early cherry blossoms and mountain snow. For a full-year comparison, see the best time to visit Taiwan by season.

North, south and mountains: how the weather differs

  • Taipei and the north: January is the coldest month, averaging roughly 14–19°C, colder during cold snaps. Keelung, Yilan and the north coast are especially rainy.
  • Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung: winter is the dry season with plenty of sun; a light jacket is often enough by day, but mornings and evenings are cooler.
  • Kenting and the east: Kenting stays warm but windy in winter; Hualien and Taitung are mild, with occasional monsoon rain.
  • High mountains (Alishan, Cingjing, Hehuanshan): much colder — Hehuanshan can drop below 0°C, and snow is possible when a strong cold air mass arrives.

What to wear in winter

  • Layers: T-shirt or light long sleeves + sweater or fleece + windproof jacket, easy to adjust indoors and out.
  • Rain gear for the north: a light raincoat or folding umbrella and non-slip shoes.
  • Warm gear for the mountains: down jacket, hat and gloves — warmth beats style at an Alishan sunrise or on Hehuanshan.
  • For hot springs: clothes that are easy to take on and off, and keep warm afterwards.

Winter-only things to do in Taiwan

Hot springs: Beitou, Jiaoxi, Guanziling and Zhiben each have their own character, and winter is the best time to soak — see our Taiwan hot spring guide.

Strawberry picking in Dahu, Miaoli: Dahu is Taiwan's best-known strawberry area. The season runs roughly from December to April, with January–February often bringing the plumpest fruit; weather shifts the timing, so check that farms are open before you go.

Early cherry blossoms: Taiwan's cherry season starts around late January, with the winter cherries on Yangmingshan's Pingjing Street among the first, followed from February by places like Wuling Farm — see our Taiwan cherry blossom charter guide.

Chasing snow on Hehuanshan: one of the few places in Taiwan with snow, though it's irregular and depends on cold fronts and moisture — see our Hehuanshan snow charter guide.

Festivals: Christmas lights by night, Taipei 101 NYE fireworks and Lunar New Year 2027.

Why a charter suits winter travel

Rain in the north, cold in the mountains and festival crowds are exactly what makes winter hard on public transport. With a charter you are dropped at the door without getting soaked, you can swap outdoor and indoor stops when it rains, and mountain roads are handled by a driver who knows them. Scattered countryside stops — strawberry farms, hot springs, cherry blossoms — fit into one day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Taiwan cold in December? What should I wear?

Not very cold in the lowlands. Taipei averages roughly 14–19°C in January and the north is often rainy and damp; the centre and south are drier and sunnier. Dress in layers with a windproof jacket and bring rain gear for the north; for high mountains like Alishan or Hehuanshan, pack a down jacket, hat and gloves.

In winter, is northern or southern Taiwan better?

It depends on what you want. The north has hot springs, Christmas and New Year events and early cherry blossoms, but more rain; the centre and south are sunnier and great for outdoor sights and old towns; for snow you need Hehuanshan. A charter lets you adjust the route to the weather.

Are charters more expensive at Christmas, New Year's Eve or Lunar New Year?

No, holidays are the same price: a full-day charter from NT$6,500 (about 8–9 hours), overtime NT$600 per hour, and driver lodging NT$1,000 per night for overnight trips. Vehicles are limited over holidays, so book early.
