Taipei on New Year's Eve: the most crowded countdown in Taiwan
Every December 31, Taipei City Government hosts its big New Year's Eve concert at Taipei City Hall Plaza, finished at midnight by the Taipei 101 fireworks. At the most recent edition (2025→2026) the fireworks lasted about 6 minutes, the concert started at 7 pm, and the whole Xinyi district filled up with crowds.
The show is short. What really makes or breaks the night is transport before and after: when to arrive, where to stand, and how to get back to your hotel. This guide covers all three, and explains where a private charter helps.
Note: This year's (2026→2027) line-up, traffic-control zone and metro arrangements are announced by Taipei City Government in December — the times below are from last year as a reference.
Choosing a spot to watch the 101 fireworks
- Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) trail: the closest high viewpoint, about 1.4 km long and normally a 20–30 minute climb, but on NYE people queue from late afternoon and the platforms fill up early.
- Four Four South Village (Sisi Nancun): right at the foot of 101, open views, no climbing — good for grandparents and kids, but arrive early.
- Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall: a big plaza with a lake reflection, close to 101 and popular with families.
- Riverside parks (e.g. Rainbow or Dajia Riverside Park): farther from Xinyi and less crowded, with a full view of 101 and an easier exit afterwards.
Winter brings a northeasterly wind, so standing upwind keeps the smoke out of your view. The closer you are to 101, the more spectacular — and the harder it is to leave.
Traffic control and the MRT: how it worked last year
For 2025→2026, the Xinyi district had three-stage traffic control from 7 pm: from 7 pm vehicles inside the zone could only leave, from 8 pm no vehicles could enter or exit, and from 10 pm to 3 am the zone expanded to parts of Zhongxiao East Road, Songde Road and Xinyi Road.
The Taipei Metro ran 42 hours non-stop from 6 am on December 31, but some exits at City Hall and Taipei 101/World Trade Center stations closed during the evening. Officials advised people not to crowd City Hall or 101/World Trade stations after the show and to walk to farther stations or use the post-show shuttle buses.
In short: on NYE night, cars cannot get into central Xinyi, and taxis or ride-hailing are very hard to find at the edge of the zone.
Getting back to your hotel: timing tips
The first hour or two after the fireworks is the most chaotic part of the night. Practical tips:
- Arrive early: front-row spots fill by late afternoon; with kids or elderly relatives, try the edge of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall or a riverside park.
- Agree on a meeting point outside the control zone: walking 20–30 minutes out of the zone beats queuing where you stand.
- Or simply wait it out: sit in a nearby café or restaurant until the first wave has cleared.
- Stay warm and charged: late-December nights are windy and chilly — bring a power bank.
