Taiwan Lantern Festival: a national event that moves cities every year
The Taiwan Lantern Festival is co-hosted by the Tourism Administration and a rotating host county, making it the island's largest Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao) celebration. It is held in a different county each year, usually around the Lantern Festival on the lunar calendar (typically February–March). Note it is *not* the same event as the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in New Taipei — Taiwan Lantern Festival is a ground-based main-lantern showcase, while Pingxi is about releasing sky lanterns by hand.

Taking 2026 as an example, the festival was held in Chiayi County from March 3 to March 15, with the main zones around the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, Taizi Boulevard and the county government area, and a main lantern themed on Alishan. Officials have also announced that 2027 will move to Miaoli County.
The host county, dates and lantern-zone locations change every year, so always confirm with that year's official announcement before you go. Lock down three things before booking a charter:

The festival is usually split into a main lantern zone and several sub-zones / themed zones:
- Main zone: the annual main lantern and light-and-sound shows — best for photos and scheduled performances, and the most crowded
- Sub-zones: themed lanterns, student and community works, art installations — usually easier to walk and shoot
- Drone / light shows: many recent editions add drone performances with fixed showtimes — check that year's schedule
Suggested flow: start with the quieter sub-zones, move toward the main zone near the top of the hour for the timed show, then head to your pickup point early to beat the worst of the exit crush.
Best times to go, and a crowd-safety note
Daily attendance often runs into the hundreds of thousands, so timing largely decides your experience:
- Busiest: Yuanxiao night, opening night, and every weekend from dusk to about 9 pm
- Calmer: weekdays, the early-evening opening window (just after lights-on), or near closing
- Best photos: the roughly 30-minute "blue hour" after sunset, when lanterns glow but the sky isn't fully dark
Crowd-safety reminders:
- Agree on a meeting point if you split up; keep an eye on phone battery; write contact info on young children
- In a crush, move with the flow, never against it; don't linger at bottlenecks for photos
- Follow on-site announcements and staff guidance, and use the marked exit routes at closing
- February–March evenings are still cool — dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes
